Why We Should Never Say “Never” — Just “Not Right Now”

We’ve all done it. Something challenging comes our way — running a marathon, starting a business, joining a gym, or learning a new skill — and the words slip out without much thought: “I could never do that.”

The problem with “never” is that it shuts the door completely. It doesn’t just express where you’re at today; it limits your future self too. It’s a final verdict on something you haven’t even allowed yourself to grow into yet.

Instead, try saying: “Just not right now.”

Why? Because “not right now” leaves the door open. It acknowledges that your current season of life, skills, or resources may not be aligned with that goal yet. But it also gives your future self permission to change, adapt, and grow.

Think about it — how many things have you accomplished in your life that once seemed impossible? Maybe you once thought you could never lift a certain weight, run a certain distance, cook a complicated recipe, or speak confidently in public. But with time, effort, and the right environment, you made it happen.

“Not right now” keeps your mind flexible. It turns impossibilities into possibilities that are simply waiting for the right time.

Here’s the truth: the “right now” might be focused on other priorities — raising kids, building your career, recovering from an injury, or simply learning the basics before going further. And that’s okay.

But the next time you’re faced with an opportunity that intimidates you, resist the temptation to say never. Instead, recognize it for what it is — a challenge you may take on in the future when the time is right.

Your future self will thank you for not closing the door before you were ready to walk through it.

So don’t say “never.” Say “not right now”… and leave space for “one day.”
