Fuel the Work. Don’t Just Survive It.
Ever finish a workout feeling like someone unplugged you halfway through and forgot to tell you?
Before you blame the workout, let’s ask the real question. Did you actually eat anything that would help you get through it?
At Ground Zero, we are not trying to collect stories about how destroyed you felt after class. That is not the badge of honor people think it is. We want you walking out feeling stronger, more capable, and maybe even a little proud of yourself instead of questioning all your life choices on the drive home.
Here is the truth. Your body runs on carbohydrates when things get intense. Those carbs get stored in your muscles as glycogen, and that is what keeps you moving when the workout gets spicy. Showing up under fueled is basically like trying to run a road trip on vibes and hope.
Most people do really well with about 40 to 60 grams of easy to digest carbs about an hour or so before training. Nothing fancy. A bagel, some oatmeal with fruit, a banana with cereal, or even rice cakes with honey if you are feeling like a minimalist chef. When your muscles have glycogen ready to go, you perform better, recover faster between sets, and you are way less likely to hit that mid workout “why am I here” moment. Research in sports nutrition consistently shows that carbs before exercise help maintain energy levels and support performance by keeping blood sugar steady and preserving muscle glycogen.
And no, the work does not end when the clock hits zero.
After your workout, your body goes into repair mode. It starts fixing the tiny muscle damage that training creates, which is exactly how you get stronger. This is where post workout nutrition matters. Fast acting carbs paired with 20 to 40 grams of protein help refill your glycogen and give your muscles what they need to rebuild. It is basically your body’s version of hitting the reset button so you are not walking around sore and cranky for three days straight.
The goal is not to see how wrecked you can get. The goal is to build a body that shows up, performs, and improves over time.
So eat like you plan to perform, not like you are trying to survive a natural disaster.
Train hard. Fuel smart. Recover better.
That is how real progress actually happens.
