What If Your Doctor Was Wrong About Exercise?
We trust doctors with our health—and most of the time, that trust is well-placed. But what happens when your doctor tells you not to exercise?
It might sound surprising, but we hear it more often than you’d think:
“My doctor told me not to lift weights.”
“My doctor said I shouldn’t squat anymore.”
“My doctor said it’s best if I just rest.”
Here’s the truth: Doctors are human, and humans make mistakes.
They’re doing their best with the information they have, but sometimes their advice is based on outdated research, general caution, or a misunderstanding of what exercise actually means.
🧠 Medical Advice Isn't Always Perfect
Let’s be clear—we’re not anti-doctor. But we are pro-advocating for yourself.
Medical professionals are trained to diagnose and treat disease, not necessarily to prescribe movement. Many receive very little education in exercise science, functional movement, or long-term physical training. And with so many patients and conditions to manage, their default advice can sometimes be overly cautious.
The problem? That advice might be keeping you in pain, out of shape, or losing independence—all in the name of "being safe."
🏋️♂️ Movement Is Medicine
Let’s reframe this.
Picking up a bag of groceries = a deadlift
Standing up from a toilet or chair = a squat
Putting a suitcase in the overhead bin = a shoulder press
When a doctor tells you to avoid these movements in the gym, the question should be:
How will I continue to do these things in everyday life if I don’t train them?
Avoiding movement doesn’t make you safer—it makes you weaker.
And when your muscles weaken, your joints stiffen, and your mobility shrinks, you’re actually at greater risk for falls, injury, and loss of independence.
🤷♀️ Ask the Right Questions
The next time a doctor says, “Don’t exercise,” try asking:
- What movements specifically should I avoid, and why?
- Can I work with a coach to modify those movements safely?
- What are the risks of not exercising at all?
- What kind of movement would help me build strength without aggravating my condition?
If the answer is “just rest,” it might be time to get a second opinion—or talk to a coach who understands how to scale movement safely based on your current ability.
At CrossFit CTRL, we modify everything. Whether you have joint replacements, arthritis, old injuries, or mobility challenges—we build your plan around you.
